PAGEANTRY IN TARABA; WHERE WE GOT IT WRONG: Job Sehero

PAGEANTRY IN TARABA; WHERE WE GOT IT WRONG

Pageantry is a fantasy world where people are recognized for their looks, talents, education and values. I want to believe that pageantry have a gigantic purpose in today’s society. It’s an easy way to gain poise, confidence, meet new people and gain friendships, and also to learn new public speaking skills.

The aim of pageantry is to provide educational opportunities through scholarships, charity (Service to humanity), encourage positive attributes in young people, community service etc. But the purpose of pageantry has been defeated in Taraba state. Miss Earth which was founded in 2001 was concerned with environmental awareness.

Taraba state is known for its fertile land which makes her the hub of tourism in Nigeria. Pageantry is supposed to be hold with high esteem, but reverse is the case and the reason is simple. We have many beauty pageants in Taraba, hence, the reason for poor outcomes.

Taraba pageantry especially the popular MR/MISS TARABA supposed to have a close link with ministry of culture and tourism where the government can support the winners and give them platform to execute their missions and visions, but the many beauty pageants we have will not allow that.

Instead, we have turned pageantry into platform for pleasure (contestants becoming sex tools in the hands of their organisers)

I want to categorically state that, the aim of pageantry has been defeated in Taraba. It doesn’t serve a purpose in this contemporary society. Many of the contestants assume and think its about being beautiful. Thus, they trudge into pageantry without drawing anything in their vision board that will breed positive change in our society.

Many of them will finish a whole tenure without any tangible project to showcase. He or she is given audience but they gave nothing to the society.

Few months ago, I saw an ongoing building construction which I know by now, it has reached it completion stage. I was told it was sponsored by Miss. Glam Nigeria and it was in a rural area. I was scintillated and exhilarated by her gesture. That is what pageantry entails, we can do same and even better.

Finally, I am calling on all the organisers of beauty pageants in Taraba to come together and reason like a family. It is high time we all go for a beauty pageant that will have full support from the state government not the many unscrupulous beauty pageants in every nook and cranny of Taraba state.
